- اقتباس :
Our sister church, the beautiful Catholic Church of St. Therese of Carmel in Delmar, San Diego, CA, hosted its first International Festival inside the church’s hall on Sunday, October 18, 2015, from 12 to 4 pm. Faithful parishioners from St. Therese & other friends from other parishes (about 20 nations) participated in this first of its kind international event.
Members from the Ladies of Hope, a Chaldean American Charity Organization represented the Chaldeans at this festival, and as parishioners coming from St. Peter Chaldean Catholic Cathedral in El Cajon, CA, they had planned to arrive at St. Therese in time to attend the 11 am Holy Mass. It is worth mentioning that many families from the Chaldean community live in Delmar and are also a part of the St. Therese of Carmel community.
After Mass, the crowd gathered at the hall, and the event started with a prayer by the church pastor, Fr. Nicholas Dempsey, who welcomed everyone and thanked them for their participation, then he blessed the food about to be sampled, representing many countries, and prepared by volunteers from the various ethnic groups who were there next to each other as one big family sharing God’s love. Many people were very pleased to try our delicious Chaldean food for the first time beside those who were familiar with it and complimented it very much.
Another important part of this international festival was the very nice & organized entertainment program that took place at the stage inside the hall. Flags from different countries were displayed in the background, singers and dancers filled the stage with colors of different ethnicities expressing their faith, culture & folklore.
I personally had the honor to be a part of this celebration of cultures (I had brought a doll dressed with the traditional dress -Quchma- from my ancestral Chaldean village of Telkeppe), and was very proud to express my Chaldean identity, as a native Iraqi Christian, among other cultures, but most proudly as an American citizen living the American dream, free to preserve and share my ancient Chaldean culture, language and liturgy with my fellow Catholics and other communities of faith, here in this church in particular, and in this country in general.
The mission of the Ladies of Hope, a Chaldean American Charity Organization is to help the women and children of the new-comers, and refugee families who are needy and less fortunate, those who cannot provide themselves with the essentials of everyday living. The organization sponsors many educational, social and fundraising events throughout the year, and is very thankful to the generosity of the people of good will, those who donate and support our programs, not only from our Chaldean community, but also, from our sincere friends, the generous donors from other parishes & organizations as well.
The Ladies of Hope would like to thank the St. Therese of Carmel Catholic Church for having us to be a part of their event, and also would like to thank the St. Therese community for their continuous support and donations toward helping the needy families of our community. Special thanks go to our dear friend Emerald Peterson, a member of St. Therese Parish Guild for all her hard work and her time. God bless you Emerald!
Finally, I would like to thank everyone who contributed their time and talent to make this event joyful and rewarding for all. Especially for making new friends!
