OUR NEW SONG - Emo d-Umtho (Mother of the Nation)
We have prepared a new song about the Aramean-Syriac Genocide Seyfo for the annual commemoration on June 15. I have previously written three songs about Seyfo over the years. This time the song is about the Syriac Mother from the oldest generation, what she has experienced and been through according to her story to the next generation.
When a nation finds itself in a crisis situation, famine or war, the feeling can be the worst for a Mother. To witness her children being starved or killed in front of her eyes is absolutely the most painful thing she can experience. As a defenseless soul, she can only protect and help her children from all the misery. That is what the mothers of Syriacs tried to do for their children during the worst Genocide that befell the Aramean-Syriac people during the First World War in Turkey.
About half a million Aramean-Syriacs were killed or lost their lives during the Seyfo Genocide. It is a miracle for a powerless people that has survived so many massacres in its long history and recovered on its own time after time. Those who fled or were forcibly displaced survived and were able to take with them history, what they have seen and experienced, and then pass on to the next generation about the terrible times they have been through.
That is what we tell in this lyric about the Syriac woman - the Mother of the Nation - her experience during the Seyfo time according to the folk tradition from the oldest generation as a source.
