Supporting Catholic Schools in the Middle East Will Encourage Peace, Cardinal Explains

Vatican City, Oct 21, 2010 / 03:03 am (EWTN News)

Cardinal John Foley recently hailed Catholic schools as an important means of understanding and cooperation in bringing peace to the Middle East.

The cardinal, who is the grand master of the Equestrian Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, made his remarks on Oct. 18 during a break in the Synod for the Middle East.

Asked if there was anything new, concrete or practical, that could be done by the churches of the West to support Christianity in the Middle East, Cardinal Foley noted that one thing stood out to him during the Pope's pilgrimage to the Holy Land last year.

“I had a chance to speak to (the leaders of Jordan, Palestine and Israel) and they said that Catholic schools in Jordan, Palestine and Israel make a great contribution to mutual understanding and to mutual cooperation.”

The cardinal explained that the unanimous praise for Catholic schools in the region was because “the schools are open to everyone and they attempt to teach understanding and work toward peace.”

He shared his personal conviction that to “promote Christian education, not as a direct means of proselytizing, but as a means of moving hearts and spirits to work together for mutual understanding and for peace,” would be the best support to the Church in the Middle East.

Cardinal Foley then highlighted the importance of the Eastern Catholic churches in the region, describing them as a treasures of “living stones.” He added that “They go back almost to the origins of Christianity.”

“We want to help to maintain these living stones...not merely the buildings, not merely the sacred places, but the communities which have existed in the Middle East since the time of Jesus Christ and the apostles.”
