Pope says Shroud of Turin Speaks
to Christians' Hearts

Vatican City, (EWTN News): Pope
Francis said on Holy Saturday that the Shroud of Turin, widely regarded as the
burial cloth of Christ, “invites us to contemplate Jesus” and his
crucifixion.
This face has eyes that are closed, it is the
face of one who is dead, and yet mysteriously he is watching us, and in silence
he speaks to us,” the Pope said in a special March 30 video message broadcast on
Italian television.
How is this possible? How is it that the
faithful, like you, pause before this icon of a man scourged and
crucified?”
The Pope said the image on the shroud “speaks to
our heart and moves us to climb the hill of Calvary, to look upon the wood of
the Cross, and to immerse ourselves in the eloquent silence of love.”
The cloth is kept in the Cathedral of St. John the
Baptist in Turin, Italy. It bears a mysterious image of a man who suffered in a
manner consistent with crucifixion.
Earlier this year, Pope Benedict XVI approved the
Holy Saturday broadcast of the shroud, which was carried on the Italian public
service channel Rai 1. Pope Francis recorded his special video message for the
broadcast.
Pope Francis' carefully worded remarks did not
directly refer to the image as one of Jesus. Rather, he called the figure “the
Man of the Shroud.”
The Catholic Church has never taken an official
position on the shroud’s authenticity. Historical records of the shroud date
back to the fourteenth century.
Pope Francis said many Christians venerate the
shroud with “a prayerful gaze” and the shroud’s image looks upon them in
turn.
Let us therefore allow ourselves to be reached by
this look, which is directed not to our eyes but to our heart,” the Pope
continued. “In silence, let us listen to what he has to say to us from beyond
death itself.”
He said the shroud’s image allows Jesus to come to
us.
This disfigured face resembles all those faces of
men and women marred by a life which does not respect their dignity, by war and
violence which afflict the weakest.”
At the same time, he added, the shroud “conveys a
great peace” and its tortured body “expresses a sovereign majesty.”
The Pope reflected on the power the shroud image
can convey.
It is as if it let a restrained but powerful
energy within it shine through, as if to say: have faith, do not lose hope; the
power of the love of God, the power of the Risen One overcomes all
things.”
Pope Francis concluded his remarks with a prayer
of St. Francis of Assisi. The prayer asks God “enlighten the shadows of my
heart, and grant me a right faith, a certain hope and perfect charity, sense and
understanding.”
The Shroud of Turin is rarely available for public
viewing. It was last the subject of a live television broadcast in
1973.
