Burglary, sex charges 'no big deal'

An unemployed Roxburgh Park man charged with aggravated burglary and sexual assault believed the allegations were no big deal.

Esam Moshi, 35, was refused bail at an out-of-session hearing at Mill Park Police Station late last night.

Moshi was charged with two counts of aggravated burglary, two charges of intentionally causing serious injury, two of recklessly causing serious injury and another of sexual assault.

Moshi, who had the charges described to him by an Arab interpreter, told the hearing that he was well known in his community and that he was training to be a bouncer.

The hearing heard that Moshi had been driving a taxi when he pulled into a driveway in Glenroy on Monday and asked the occupant, a woman aged 87, for water for his car.

He allegedly followed her into her home and grabbed her by the throat demanding money and then pushed her to the floor.

The next day he allegedly used the same method of deception in Lalor where he followed a woman in her 60s into her house and grabbed her by the throat demanding money.

He also allegedly pushed his hand down her top.

Moshi, who was dressed in blue paper overalls, asked for bail saying he wanted to be home with his wife last night.

"I'm very much well known in my community and I do not think that I did anything big," he said.

He said he regretted what he did, would not do it again and needed the money to pay the rent.

It was alleged he was arrested when he stole a crowbar from a hardware store.

Police believe he was about to commit more burglaries.

The bail magistrate however thought that it was a risk to bail him and remanded him to face the Melbourne Magistrates Court today.
