Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin is not allowed to receive Holy Communion since Bishop Thomas John Paprocki, the head of the Catholic Church in the Springfield area, banned the Democratic senator from the sacrament.

In a statement released to the media, Paprocki reaffirmed that Durbin cannot have Holy Communion, as he cited that the senator was one of 14 Catholic lawmakers who voted against banning late-term abortions.
Paprocki implied that Durbin had committed a "grave sin" when he failed "to protect the lives of the innocent and defenseless" and said the senator may only receive Holy Communion if he repents.
The senate voted on the Pain-Capable Unborn Children Act in January following its passing in Congress. The proposal, which deemed abortion after 20 weeks as illegal, failed to win the needed 60 votes.
This was not the first incident between Durbin and the Catholic Church. In 2004, then-Monsignor Kevin Vann also refused to give the senator the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Durbin apparently admitted then that this was "one of the most painful and difficult experiences in my public life."
In 2014, Paprocki also spoke with Durbin regarding his pro-abortion stance. The senator told the bishop he did not want to cause a scene in the Church so he has been observing his ban.
The bishop stated that the decision should not been seen as a punishment. Instead, he is hoping it will help the senator, who once supported a pro-life cause, to have a change of heart.
"I sincerely pray that he will repent and return to being pro-life," Paprocki said in the statement.
Durbin, a pro-lifer in his early career in politics, changed his position in 1989. Planned Parenthood, Pro-Choice America and the National Right to Life Committee have recognized his stand. Durbin also told CNN in an interview in 2017 that he had committed to women's rights in line with the Democratic party's convictions, which made pro-choice their platform several years ago.
"I know within the ranks of the Democratic Party there are those who see that differently on a personal basis," the senator said. "But when it comes to the policy position, I think we need to be clear and unequivocal."
