New York City was re-energized on Wednesday thanks to the presence of Meghan Markle, who came to town for her baby shower at the Mark Hotel. The affair, reportedly hosted by her pals Amal Clooney and Serena Williams (no big deal), was an intimate gathering of just 15 or so close friends, including O's editor-at-large Gayle King, who was kind enough to share a few stories with us.

Gayle confirmed that the event kicked off with a flower arranging class. "I've never seen anything like this at a baby shower," Gayle said on CBS This Morning. All the guests made individual vases, and then, by the duchess's decree, the leftovers were donated to Repeat Roses, a charitable organization.

"I thought that was a very sweet thing," Gayle remarked about Markle's gesture. "I mean it just speaks to who she is. She's very kind. She's very generous, and a really, really sweet person."

Speaking of sweet, Markle had a romantic reason for not opening gifts at the shower-which, besides playing "dirty diapers," or decorating onesies, is a fairly standard activity. And no, it wasn't because feigning delight in a crowd full of cooing women is awkward.

She wanted to wait until she got home to Prince Harry so that they could experience it together. And okay, yes, her excuse may have been a tactful way of avoiding that ritual, but it's valid, and we're stealing it.

Right after the shower, Markle slipped into some Lululemon pants with a "mommy" nameplate necklace and headed back to London, presumably to review her haul with Harry.

While we may never know what Gayle gifted her (she doesn't want to spoil Harry's surprise), we are assured by her that "a good time was had by all."
